Visitors

Since Bellingham was the coaling harbor for the North Pacific Fleet, it entertained many officers of the Navy. H.A. Herbert, other officers of the Navy, mayors and city fathers with their ladies, attended a glowing social event in May, 1894. The event started with a banquet at the Hotel Fairhaven, and ended with a formal dance in the evening. The evening was followed by an informal reception for President A.L. Black of the Whatcom Board of Trade on Eldridge Ave. Also attending were city officials, officers of the Fairhaven Chamber of Commerce, and The Whatcom Board of Trades.

A somewhat similiar honor was celebrated by local society in the following year, when Vice President and Mrs. Adlai E. Stevenson visited the city, and were met at the B.B. & B.C. Railroad by a welcoming band of sixty five former fellow townsmen and women of Bloomingtown, Ill.
